Mića Popović
Born: 1923, Loznica – 1996, Beograd
Born on 12 June 1923 in Loznica, died on 22 December 1996 in Belgrade. He finished primary school and the Third Boys' Grammar School in Belgrade (1933–1941) and enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Belgrade in 1946, in the class of Professor Ivan Tabaković.
His work is marked by two major phases — art informel (1959–1969) and “scene painting” (1969–1979), out of which grew an engaged painting charged with political symbols. His best-known works include the self-portrait “No, Thank You!” (1977) and the Gvozden cycle devoted to migrant workers.
He was elected a corresponding member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts in 1978 and a full member in 1985. He received the Golden Palette award (1969) among many other honours. A memorial gallery holding his bequest stands in Loznica, and his works are kept in museums across the region.
